How Important is the Dental Health of my Pet?

Your pet's dental and oral health is a very important aspect of his or her general well-being.  Just as you go to your dentist, your pet should have its teeth evaluated each year as part of its complete physical examination.  There are many factors that influence a pet's dental health, including his or her breed, genetic background, age, diet, chewing behavior, tooth alignment and overall health.
Dental and oral disease is one of the most frequently diagnosed conditions in small animal medicine, but is often an area that is neglected.  Thorough dental examinations, and the use of dental radiographs when indicated, prevents these conditions from being overlooked.  Many of the problems diagnosed are both reversible and preventable.  As your pet's owner, you may be the first to become aware of a problem with your pet's teeth!
